The cap and gowns for the Class of 2018 has been white for girls and blue for boys for as long as we can remember. The district mandated that all cap and gowns be one color to avoid upsetting those who are uncomfortable wearing their designated color.

There has been much controversy over which color the cap and gowns will be changed to. First, they were going to be a mixture of blue and white with a logo on the chest. According to Mrs. Norman, they were then going to make everyone wear blue. And now, according to teachers, the colors are back to white for girls and blue for boys. So, administration has come full circle with their decision.

Parents were complaining to the district because senior portraits were taken in the original cap and gown colors and they did not want to see their child in a different color at graduation. Administration took this into account when deciding what the senior class would wear.

The real question is, “Are school colors gender bias?” Blue and white are our school colors and are assigned to each gender. Is the argument based on equality for genders or our colors simply being assigned to one gender? However, if anyone is uncomfortable in their predetermined color, they can request which ever color they feel comfortable with.

The district made these changes to make everyone feel included. According to Mr. Telles, “Everyone has the right to voice their opinion as long as it is done respectfully.” The senior class can still petition to make sure the color of the cap and gowns stays the same in the future. Those that disagree can also voice how they feel about the matter.

Cap and gowns colors are back to normal due to protest from the student body.
